Contextualism: Collage City and Beyond 3
It seems an appropriate time to revisit Contextualism and Collage City within the framework of the Genealogy of Urban Design network using the new tools of representation available.
The initial Contextualism, Collage City and Beyond seminar investigated Colin Rowe's mid-twentieth century role in appropriating Sitte's 1890's reaction to Von Forster's 1860 imperial design for the Vienna Ringstrasse. Rowe's critical appropriation paved the way for many later iterations. Almost all the speakers in the first seminar were students of Rowe studio.
The second seminar investigated the diffusion of Rowe’s pedagogy into a wider network, with younger speakers from Asia and Latin America. Codes shifted to create a greatly more fragmented and flexible Collage City inclusive of self-built, informal urbanism.
The third seminar returns to Sitte’s community arguments to study contextualism and collage at the Micro-Urban level in Asia.

The Sustainable Design Handbook
Nico Larco & Kaarin Knudson present their research behind the Sustainable Urban Design Handbook. Their research gathers the best sustainability practices and latest research from the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, planning, development, ecology, and environmental engineering and presents them in a graphically rich and accessible format that can help guide urban design decisions in cities of all sizes. The research presents a comprehensive framework that organizes more than 50 elements of sustainable urban design under five main topics–Energy Use & Greenhouse Gas, Water, Ecology & Habitat, Energy Use & Production, and Equity & Health–and relative to four project scales: Region & City, District & Neighborhood, Block & Street, and Project & Parcel.

UDAC Meet at the 113th ACSA Annual Meeting
Building the Collective Field - What does design repair look like beyond the scale of a building, beyond our current polarized context, and in the face of intensifying global and social crises? How might design foster greater collaboration, capacity building, co-strategy and mutual benefit? This action session aspires to model the ethos of what we teach and work towards, to think on expanding and enriching spatial design and our own relationships as novel practice that counteracts exploitation and builds a system of care. Join this session to participate in an exchange of ideas and initiatives with the UDAC, and organize!
